Gozo's forced sanctuary
Gozo, a strategic maritime crossroads in the heart of the Mediterranean, has always been vulnerable to invasions and corsair raids. The most significant and traumatic episode was the sack of 1551 by Dragut Reis's Ottoman forces, when nearly 5,000 Gozitans were taken into slavery, almost entirely depopulating the island. Only a small handful of people, barricaded within the Victoria Citadel, escaped this grim fate. This devastating attack profoundly affected the island and strengthened the belief that the Citadel was the only sanctuary capable of protecting its inhabitants.
During subsequent centuries, life in Gozo revolved around the protection offered by the Citadel. In 1637, Grand Master Jean-Paul de Lascaris-Castellar issued a decree obliging all island residents to spend the night within its ramparts to guard against constant Barbary corsair raids. Women, often alone while men worked in the fields, became the primary guardians of this family sanctuary, developing support networks and vital knowledge for survival and resilience in case of siege or attack.
