The history of Xlendi
From Ancient Port to Watchtower Post
Xlendi's history goes back to ancient times. Punic-Byzantine tombs found at St. Simon Point and within Xlendi Valley indicate the area was used as a port by the Romans. The cliffs provided natural protection from winds. The bay's seabed contains Roman amphorae, remnants of shipwrecks caused by its reef.
A Strategic Bay and its Defenders
Xlendi Bay's strategic importance became clear during the rule of the Knights of St. John. To defend against pirate and Ottoman incursions, Grand Master Juan de Lascaris-Castellar ordered the construction of Xlendi Tower on June 29, 1650. This rectangular watchtower, funded by the Università of Gozo, was armed with two 6-pounder guns, later replaced by 4-pounders. It was staffed by a Capomastro, a bombardier, and an Aggiutante, with three men guarding it at night. It is the oldest freestanding coastal watchtower on Gozo.
The tower fell into disrepair by 1681 and was damaged during the 1693 earthquake, but continued its defensive role. Under British rule, the Royal Malta Fencible Regiment took over Xlendi Tower in 1829, followed by the Royal Malta Fencible Artillery. It served until 1873 when it was abandoned. The tower was briefly used as an observation post during World War II by the Coast Police. In October 2009, responsibility for the tower was transferred to the Munxar Local Council and Din l-Art Ħelwa for restoration.

From Mġarr, take bus 301 to Victoria (Rabat), Gozo's capital, then transfer to bus 306 or 330 to Xlendi Bay. The bus ride from Victoria to Xlendi takes about 10 minutes.
