The Forgotten Forts: New Sweden's Secret Plan
« "The Swedes also took possession of a place called Sandhoeck, where they built a fort which they named Casimir..." »— Israel Acrelius, "The History of the Colony of New Sweden" (1759)
In 1638, under the aegis of the Swedish West India Company, the expedition led by former New Amsterdam director Peter Minuit established the colony of Nya Sverige (New Sweden) near present-day Wilmington. The colonists, mainly Swedes and Finns, settled Fort Christina and began trading with local Native American populations, particularly the Lenape. The objective was to establish an agricultural and fur-trading colony, far from Dutch and English influence.
The Swedish presence on the Delaware River was a constant source of tension with the Dutch, who also claimed the territory. In 1651, Dutch Governor Peter Stuyvesant built Fort Casimir (present-day New Castle) to assert Dutch sovereignty. The Swedes retaliated by capturing the fort in 1654, renaming it Fort Trinity. This victory was short-lived: in 1655, Stuyvesant returned with a superior force and recaptured Fort Trinity, ending New Sweden and incorporating its territories into New Netherland.
