From Quaker Settlement to Industrial Powerhouse

Camden's story begins in the late 17th century, when Irish Quakers settled on the eastern banks of the Delaware River, across from what would become Philadelphia. Between 1681 and 1700, they established a community on a tract of land bordered by several creeks, making it a natural hub for transportation between Philadelphia and other West Jersey towns.

For over 150 years, Camden served primarily as a ferry landing, connecting New Jersey with the growing metropolis of Philadelphia. The town received its formal name in 1773, when Jacob Cooper laid out a town site and named it after Charles Pratt, the 1st Earl Camden, a British politician who had opposed taxing the American colonies. Camden was officially incorporated as a city on February 13, 1828.

The Rise and Fall of "The City Invincible"

The 19th century brought significant transformation. In 1830, the Camden and Amboy Railroad was chartered, establishing a crucial link between New York City and Philadelphia via ferry terminals in South Amboy and Camden. This spurred an increase in population and commerce, and Camden industrialized in the latter half of the century. By the late 19th century, Camden was an industrial center. Major companies like the Campbell Soup Company, the New York Shipbuilding Corporation, and RCA Victor established a manufacturing base and a port, offering economic and cultural opportunities.

The 20th century, however, brought decline. The construction of the Benjamin Franklin Bridge in 1926 accelerated suburban flight and contributed to factory closures. Like many American cities, Camden suffered from the decline of the manufacturing industry in the latter half of the 20th century, leading to economic instability and population loss.

• —Walt Whitman House — This house at 328 Mickle Blvd was the final home of American poet Walt Whitman. He spent his later years here and died in 1892.
• —Johnson Park — This green space on the Rutgers University–Camden campus features the former Cooper Library, which now houses the Walt Whitman Arts Center. The park displays sculptures, including a replica of Sir George Frampton's "Peter Pan" statue.
• —Camden City Hall — This Art Deco building at 520 Market Street is the tallest in Camden, standing at 371 feet. Its light gray granite facade and central tower are visible.
• —Waterfront Park (view of the Benjamin Franklin Bridge) — Views of the Benjamin Franklin Bridge are available here. This suspension bridge connects Camden to Philadelphia. Opened in 1926, it was once the longest suspension bridge in the world.
• —Battleship New Jersey Museum and Memorial — The USS New Jersey (BB-62) is a battleship that served in World War II, the Korean War, and the Vietnam War. Visitors can tour the ship and learn about naval history.
• —Adventure Aquarium — This aquarium on the Camden Waterfront houses over 8,500 aquatic species, including a collection of sharks and the only hippos at an aquarium worldwide.

The period from May through June and again from September to mid-October offers comfortable weather for outdoor activities. Temperatures are pleasant, and humidity levels are moderate. Avoid July, which can be warm and humid, with average highs around 86-88°F (30-31°C) and higher precipitation. Winters, from December to March, are cold with average lows around 25-27°F (-4 to -3°C) and some snowfall, making outdoor exploration less appealing. Cloud cover is highest in December and January.

Camden is across the Delaware River from Philadelphia. Philadelphia International Airport (PHL) is the closest major airport. The Benjamin Franklin Bridge provides a direct road link between Philadelphia and Camden.

Much of the city's points of interest, including the Adventure Aquarium and Battleship New Jersey, are concentrated around the Camden Waterfront, making this area walkable. Public transportation options include the PATCO Speedline, which connects Camden with Philadelphia. Parking is available in lots and garages near major attractions, especially around the waterfront. Visitors often focus on the waterfront area and the Rutgers-Camden campus.
