The Nag Hammadi Cipher — Uncover the Heretic Gospel

🎭Your Mission

You are a visiting Coptic scholar, summer 1946, drawn to the recent, earth-shattering discoveries near Nag Hammadi.

In 1945, two

The Forgotten Words of the Egyptian Desert

« « Leur erreur était de ne pas avoir percé la vérité des choses, mais de n'avoir vu que les apparences. » »
L'Évangile de Philippe, Codex de Nag Hammadi

The Hidden Library of the Desert

In December 1945, a young fellah named Muhammad Ali al-Samman accidentally discovered a sealed jar while digging for guano near the cliff of Jebel al-Tarif, not far from Nag Hammadi. Inside, he found thirteen leather-bound papyrus codices, containing 52 texts, mostly Gnostic. These writings, dating from the 3rd and 4th centuries CE, included Christian apocrypha such as the Gospel of Thomas, the Gospel of Philip, and the Apocryphon of John, offering unprecedented insight into early Christianity and alternative thought currents.

The discovery was of paramount importance, comparable to that of the Dead Sea Scrolls. These texts, written in Coptic, had been buried, likely by orthodox Christian monks, to protect them from destruction after being condemned as heresies. They revealed the richness and diversity of beliefs within early Christianity, as well as the doctrinal conflicts that led to their suppression. Their study has since revolutionized our understanding of the religious and philosophical history of late antiquity.

1945
Discovery of the Gnostic codices by Muhammad Ali al-Samman at Jebel al-Tarif.
1947
Acquisition of the Jung Codex by Carl Gustav Jung, marking the start of academic study.
1977
Publication of the first complete English translation of the Nag Hammadi Gospels.
