The Brothers of the Sword (1202-1236)
In 1202, Bishop Albert of Riga founded the Brothers of the Sword (Fratres militiæ Christi de Livonia) to lead the crusade against the pagan tribes of Livonia. The first military order of the Baltic countries, it adopted a rule inspired by the Templars and bore a red sword on a white cloak. Grand Master Vinno of Rohrbach established his headquarters at Wenden Castle (Cēsis) around 1209, making this fortress the nerve center of conquest.
The order reached its peak under Volquin of Naumburg (1229-1236) who subdued the Estonians and Couronians. But on September 22, 1236, at the Battle of Saule against the Lithuanians and Semigallians, the order suffered a catastrophic defeat. Volquin and 48 knights perished. The survivors were forced to merge with the Teutonic Order in 1237, marking the end of this first experiment in Baltic military Christianization.
