Saint-Omer, secret arsenal of the Sun King
From 1669, Louis XIV transformed Saint-Omer into a nerve center of French military industry. The city, strategically placed on the borders of the Spanish Netherlands, housed the kingdom's most sophisticated weapons manufactories. Flemish master-founders and French engineers perfected the art of cannon casting there, creating artillery pieces renowned throughout Europe.
The stolen plans affair of 1672 shook royal confidence. Sébastien Le Prestre de Vauban led the investigation and discovered a Dutch espionage network infiltrated to the highest levels of the royal workshops. This betrayal pushed the king to strengthen surveillance of his manufactories and create a military document coding system that would last until the Revolution.
