Romanesque art and noble houses in Spain's prettiest village
📱 1 to 10 phones · 1 team per phone · Independent codes
Every house in Santillana bears a coat of arms. Every coat of arms tells a lineage. And every lineage hides a secret the stones have never forgotten.
Santillana del Mar is an open-air museum of heraldry. From the 14th to the 18th century, Cantabria's great families competed to build the finest mansions. Crenellated towers, wrought-iron balconies, sculpted doorways — the entire village is a language of stone that this game teaches you to decipher.
« "Santillana is a village where the dead speak louder than the living. You just need to read the walls." »— — On Calle de Juan Infante, between two rival coats of arms
Santillana owes its existence to a monastery founded in the 9th century to house the relics of Saint Juliana. Around this sanctuary, noble families settled, drawn by royal privileges. The Romanesque collegiate church, built in the 12th century, became medieval Cantabria's spiritual and political heart.
From the 14th to the 16th century, the Barreda, Villa, Velarde and Tagle lineages turned the village into a heraldic battlefield. Each family erected its tower, taller than the neighbour's. Torre del Merino and Torre de Don Borja faced each other in a stone duel that continues to this day.
In the 18th century, hidalgos who had gone to the Americas returned wealthy and built Baroque palaces. The Casa de los Hombrones, with its two stone warriors, is the symbol of this colonial ostentation. Then time stopped. Santillana crossed the centuries unchanged — a ghost village turned living museum.

Absolutely. The puzzles aren't obvious — a curious teen will sweat just enough to be proud of cracking them. Progressive hints prevent frustration: if stuck, unlock hint level 1, then 2, then 3.
Three hint levels per puzzle, with a small increasing time penalty. If truly stuck after level 3, you can skip the step (45-min penalty). The point: nobody stays blocked and goes home frustrated.
