Taba: A border, a verdict, a peace
Following the 1978 Camp David Accords and the 1979 Egyptian-Israeli Peace Treaty, Israel withdrew from Sinai in 1982. However, a small strip of territory in Taba, including a luxury hotel, remained under Israeli occupation due to a disagreement over the exact demarcation of the border. Egypt insisted on the delimitation defined by the 1906 Anglo-Ottoman agreements, which established a demarcation line from the Gulf of Aqaba to Rafah. For Israel, the border should include Taba.
Facing a deadlock in bilateral negotiations, both countries agreed in 1986 to submit the dispute to an international arbitration tribunal in Geneva. For two years, legal experts and historians examined old maps, archival documents, and testimonies. On September 29, 1988, the tribunal rendered its verdict, confirming the Egyptian position and the validity of the 1906 border. Taba was finally returned to Egypt in February 1989, marking a major success for diplomacy and international law.
