The Devil vs Napoleon — the impossible wager of 1822
« Fluctuat nec mergitur »— Devise de la ville de Bordeaux — gravée sur l'Hôtel de Ville
Pont de Pierre, inaugurated in 1822 under Napoleon I, was the first permanent bridge to cross the Garonne at Bordeaux. Its construction, led by engineer Claude Deschamps, represented a colossal technical challenge given the river's powerful currents and the marshy nature of the banks. The 17 arches in Bourg stone rose after 12 years of labor, mobilizing 4,000 workers and costing more than 8 million gold francs.
According to Bordeaux legend, the anonymous architect of the bridge made a pact with the Devil to overcome construction difficulties. In exchange for his demonic help, Satan demanded the soul of each first person crossing the bridge. But the cunning architect had a small secret hole arranged above the second arch. On inauguration day, each time the Devil tried to seize a soul, he was distracted by this mysterious opening and forgot his sinister mission, letting the living cross unharmed.
