The philosopher's secret journal
📱 1 to 10 phones · 1 team per phone · Independent codes
Michel de Montaigne carved 57 Greek and Latin sentences on the beams of his tower. His Essays contain coded messages about death, freedom, and human nature. The Renaissance's most lucid philosopher had a secret.
Montaigne was mayor of Bordeaux from 1581 to 1585, in the midst of the Wars of Religion. A moderate in a world of fanatics, he navigated between Catholics and Protestants with formidable political skill. But it was in his tower, surrounded by his books, that he wrote the Essays — a text that, behind its apparent wisdom, conceals a radical philosophy of individual freedom, dangerous for its time.

« "What do I know?" »— — Michel de Montaigne, personal motto, c. 1576
Michel Eyquem de Montaigne was born in 1533 at the Château de Montaigne, in Périgord. His father, a convinced humanist, had him learn Latin as his mother tongue. At 38, Montaigne retired to his castle tower to write. On the ceiling beams of his "library," he had 57 sentences carved in Greek and Latin — quotations from Sextus Empiricus, Lucretius, and Ecclesiastes forming a secret philosophical program.
The Essays, published between 1580 and 1595, invented a new genre: self-exploration. Montaigne writes about death, friendship, education, cannibals, vanity — with an unprecedented freedom of tone. But behind this apparent nonchalance, scholars have identified hidden structures, internal cross-references, and truncated quotations suggesting a second level of reading.
Mayor of Bordeaux during the plague of 1585, Montaigne crossed the city along precise routes. The Porte Cailhau, the Grosse Cloche, the Basilique Saint-Michel, the Place de la Bourse — each of these places bears the trace of his passage and his philosophy. Montaigne died in 1592, but his Essays continue to yield secrets to those who know how to read between the lines.
