The Queen of a Thousand Faces
Hatshepsut, daughter of Pharaoh Thutmose I, is one of the few women to have ruled as pharaoh in ancient Egypt. Ascending to the throne around 1479 BC, she initially served as regent for her young nephew and stepson, Thutmose III, before proclaiming herself pharaoh. Her reign, which lasted about 22 years, was marked by great economic stability, flourishing trade expeditions (notably to the Land of Punt), and ambitious architectural projects, including her magnificent mortuary temple at Deir el-Bahari.
Despite her success, after her death around 1458 BC, Thutmose III undertook a systematic campaign of damnatio memoriae, erasing Hatshepsut's name and images from monuments. The reasons for this act are debated: personal revenge, a desire to restore the male lineage to the throne, or simply a rewriting of history to legitimize his own reign. It was not until the 19th century that Egyptologists, such as Auguste Mariette, rediscovered the extent of her reign and her unique place in Egyptian history.
