Alexander the Great, King of Macedon and conqueror of the Persian Empire, died in Babylon in 323 BC. His embalmed body became the subject of a fierce struggle among his generals. Ptolemy I Soter, one of the Diadochi, managed to seize it and brought it to Egypt, first to Memphis, then to Alexandria, the city founded by Alexander himself.
