Montgomery — The Secret Vow

Montgomery, the capital of Alabama, was in 1955 a deeply segregated city, where Jim Crow laws governed every aspect of African Americans' daily lives. Public buses were the most flagrant symbol of this discrimination: Black passengers had to board at the front to pay their fare, then disembark to re-enter through the back, often being denied access if there were no seats left in the back or if the bus departed before they could re-board. The front rows were reserved for whites, and Black people were forced to give up their seats to any white passenger, even if it meant standing. This daily humiliation created fertile ground for change.

Rosa Parks' arrest for refusing to give up her seat to a white passenger on December 1, 1955, was not an isolated incident, but the spark that ignited the fire. Prepared by activists like Jo Ann Robinson of the Women's Political Council and leaders like E.D. Nixon, the Montgomery bus boycott was an unprecedented collective action. Over 40,000 African Americans refused to use the buses for 381 days, organizing carpools, walking, or using makeshift taxis. This peaceful movement, led by the young pastor Martin Luther King Jr., ultimately led to the Supreme Court's decision declaring bus segregation unconstitutional, marking a major victory for the civil rights movement.
