Shiroyama — The Last Stand of the Satsuma Rebellion

Your journey begins at Kagoshima Port, a strategic point where rebels took control in February 1877 to seize naval ammunition. From here, Admiral Kawamura Sumiyoshi's naval batteries bombarded Shiroyama on September 23-24, 1877. In March 1877, an Imperial force also landed here to cut off the rebels from their base, highlighting the port's vital importance for controlling Kagoshima and the Kyushu region. The port, near Dolphin Port, was also the scene of the Shigakkō students' attack on the naval ammunition depot, a sign of rising tensions.

Moving towards Shiroyama, you pass through Xavier Park, commemorating Francis Xavier's arrival in Kagoshima in 1549. This park, with its statue erected in 1934, marks the introduction of Christianity to Japan, an event centuries before the Meiji era upheavals. The path to Shiroyama Hill then leads you to Terukuni Shrine, built in 1873 in honor of Shimazu Nariakira, daimyo of Satsuma. Nariakira (1809-1858) was an early modernizer, founder of the Satsuma artillery school, which ironically supplied weapons to the 1877 rebels.

Nearby, the Former Kagoshima Prefectural Office Main Building, erected in 1916, reveals the Western architecture symbolizing post-rebellion Imperial modernization. This building testifies to Kagoshima's transformation after the 1877 events, illustrating Japan's new face. About a kilometer away, you reach the Tsuru-maru Castle Ruins, the center of the Satsuma domain in the 17th century. Rebels controlled this area before their retreat to Shiroyama, making these ruins a key point in samurai defensive strategy.

The route then takes you to the Saigo Takamori Statue, erected in 1898. Saigō (1828-1877), a central figure of the Satsuma Rebellion, led the uprising against Meiji reforms. Here, Saigō and about 300 samurai made their last stand against 30,000 Imperial soldiers under Yamagata Aritomo, who had built trenches and obstacles around the hill. Naval and land bombardment was intense before the final charge.
