In 1869, as the Boshin War raged, the last samurai of the Shogunate made their desperate stand in Hakodate's star-shaped fortress of Goryokaku
You are a Shinsengumi loyalist, tasked in 1869 Hakodate to expose the betrayal that doomed the Republic of Ezo.
The Boshin War rages as the
In 1868, as the Meiji Restoration reshaped Japan, a group of samurai loyal to the shogunate proclaimed the Republic of Ezo in Hakodate. Barricaded in Goryōkaku Fortress, they fought a final battle to preserve their ideals. Immerse yourself in this desperate struggle, where honor and tradition confront modernity.
« Je mourrai comme un samouraï, fidèle au bushidō jusqu'à mon dernier souffle »— Hijikata Toshizō, vice-commandant du Shinsengumi, mai 1869
In January 1868, the Boshin War breaks out between supporters of Emperor Meiji and those of Shogun Tokugawa Yoshinobu. This civil war opposes two visions of Japan: modernists wanting to open the country to the West versus traditionalists attached to the Tokugawa feudal system. Enomoto Takeaki, former shogun admiral, refuses to surrender the fleet and flees to Ezo (Hokkaido) with 3000 men.
On May 20, 1869, after five months of resistance in the Western-style fortress of Goryōkaku, the last shogunate loyalists surrender. Hijikata Toshizō, legendary vice-commander of the Shinsengumi, dies in combat at Hakodate. This battle definitively marks the end of the samurai era and the advent of modern Japan. The Republic of Ezo, ephemeral rebel government, disappears with the fall of the star fortress.
