The Feudal Foundations of Tosa Province

Kochi's history is linked to its location on Shikoku Island and its role as the center of the Tosa Domain. Records of Tosa Shrine, a Shinto institution, date back to 478 CE during the reign of Emperor Yūryaku. The shrine's position, on land that resisted flooding from the Monobe River, gave its priests political influence over regional governance throughout the classical and medieval periods.

The city's form began with the construction of Kochi Castle. Following his contributions to the Battle of Sekigahara in 1600, Yamauchi Kazutoyo was granted the province of Tosa by Tokugawa Ieyasu. Yamauchi began building Kochi Castle on Otakasaka Hill in 1601, completing the main enclosure and second circle of defense by 1603. The castle complex was mostly finished by 1611. This castle served as the administrative and military center of the Tosa Domain until 1871.

Resilience Through Fire and Reconstruction

Kochi Castle was damaged by disaster. In 1727, a large fire swept through the castle town, destroying most of the castle's structures, with the exception of the Otemon Gate. Reconstruction began in 1729, aiming to replicate the original Edo-period design. The main keep, or tenshu, was rebuilt by 1749, and the entire castle complex was largely restored by 1753. This reconstruction preserved the castle's Edo-period architecture, making it one of the few castles in Japan to retain its original main keep and inner bailey structures.

Other sites also faced reconstruction. Chikurin-ji Temple, founded in 724 CE by the priest Gyōki, saw its main hall and Daishi-do rebuilt in the mid-17th century. Tosa Shrine's original buildings were reconstructed in 1368 after typhoon damage, and again in 1570 during the Warring States period, with the current main and worship halls dating to 1864. These cycles of destruction and rebuilding show the cultural and historical significance of these sites to Kochi and the Tosa region.

• —Kochi Castle — This is one of Japan's 12 castles with an original main keep, preserved since its 1749 reconstruction after a fire. Visitors can explore the main keep, which offers a view of Kochi City, and the Kaitokukan palace, the feudal lord's residence, connected to the castle tower by a corridor.
• —Chikurin-ji Temple (Godaizan) — The 31st temple on the Shikoku 88 Temple Pilgrimage, founded in 724 CE. It is known for its principal image of Monju Bosatsu, the Bodhisattva of Wisdom. The temple features a pond-viewing garden, attributed to Musō Soseki, and a vermilion five-story pagoda, reconstructed in 1980.
• —Katsurahama Beach — A crescent-shaped beach overlooking the Pacific Ocean. The area includes a bronze statue of Sakamoto Ryōma, the Sakamoto Ryōma Memorial Museum, and the Katsurahama Aquarium, all within Katsurahama Park.
• —Tosa Shrine — One of Shikoku's oldest Shinto institutions, established in 478 CE. Its main hall and worship hall, dating to 1864, display the Tosa style of shrine architecture. The shrine is surrounded by ancient camphor trees and is known for its 'Iri-tombo' style of worship halls.
• —Otesuji Street (Sunday Market) — This street hosts a Sunday market, a tradition that has continued for centuries. It is a place to find fresh produce, regional specialties, and goods from local vendors.

The best times to visit Kochi are during the spring (late March to early May) and autumn (October to November). In spring, temperatures are mild, ranging from 10°C to 20°C, and the city's cherry blossoms usually bloom earlier than in Kyoto, making Kochi Castle a viewing spot. The Tosa Seaside Festival in early April offers traditional performances and local food.

Autumn, particularly October and November, provides weather with temperatures between 19°C and 24°C, low humidity, and reduced rainfall. This period is also peak season for katsuo bonito, a local fish. Avoid visiting between June and September due to the rainy season (June-July) and the typhoon window (August-September), which can lead to suspended train, ferry, and flight services. Winter is mild and dry.

Kochi is accessible via Kochi Ryoma Airport (KCZ), which has domestic flights. From JR Kochi Station, the city center is navigable. For those arriving by train, the station is connected. Within the city, walking is a way to explore central areas like Kochi Castle and Otesuji Street. Public transportation, including local buses and trams, covers wider areas. For example, the MY Yu Bus connects JR Kochi Station to Chikurin-ji Temple. Taxis are available. If driving, parking is available around major attractions like Kochi Castle and Katsurahama Beach. Katsurahama Beach is about a 15-minute drive from Kochi Minami Interchange. Bus services to some areas like Katsurahama can be limited, so checking timetables in advance is advisable. The Otesuji Street Sunday Market is a weekly event, so expect road closures and activity in that area on Sundays.
