Charles II of Navarre, nicknamed 'the Bad' by his contemporaries, is one of the most controversial figures in medieval history. His reign (1349-1387) was a period of incessant intrigues, political betrayals, and shifting alliances, placing him at the heart of the Hundred Years' War conflicts between France, England, and Castile. Although often depicted as an unscrupulous sovereign, he was also a builder, a legislator, and a patron of the arts, leaving a complex and fascinating legacy.
