The Master's Shadow in Malta
Michelangelo Merisi, known as Caravaggio (1571-1610), was forced to flee Rome in 1606 after killing a man in a duel. His flight first took him to Naples, then to Malta in July 1607. There, thanks to the protection of Grand Master Alof de Wignacourt, he was welcomed into the Order of the Knights of St. John, and made a Knight of Justice. It was during this period that he painted his Maltese masterpieces, including the Beheading of St John the Baptist, the only work he ever signed.
However, Caravaggio's turbulent and violent nature caught up with him. In August 1608, a new quarrel erupted, culminating in a duel that led to his imprisonment in Fort St. Angelo. Convicted of insubordination and banished from the Order, he managed a daring escape from his supposedly impregnable prison, disappearing into the night. This hasty departure from Malta remains one of the most mysterious and intriguing episodes of his life.
