The Golden Age and the Ashes of Resistance
Founded in 1535 by Duarte Coelho Pereira, Olinda quickly became one of the most prosperous cities in colonial Brazil, thanks to its rich sugar cane plantations. Its baroque architecture and grandiose monasteries testified to its wealth and influence. However, this opulence attracted covetousness, and in 1630, the Dutch West India Company launched a massive invasion. After a brief occupation, the Dutch set fire to the city in 1631, reducing much of its treasures to ashes to establish their new capital in Recife.
Despite the destruction, the spirit of Olinda was not broken. The population, led by emblematic figures such as João Fernandes Vieira and André Vidal de Negreiros, organized a fierce resistance known as the Pernambucan Insurrection. For over twenty years, they waged an relentless guerrilla war against the occupants, refusing to submit. The "Plano de Restauração" (Restoration Plan), a complex network of messages and strategies, was the guiding thread of this struggle which culminated in the definitive expulsion of the Dutch in 1654, marking a crucial victory for Brazilian identity.
