Effigy Mounds — Mound Builders' Secret

Your journey begins at the Effigy Mounds National Monument Visitor Center in Harpers Ferry, the main access point since 1949. Here you familiarize yourself with the scope of this National Historic Landmark, which protects 206 pre-Columbian mounds. The center, open from 8:30 AM to 4:30 PM, serves as a prelude to discovering the 31 animal-shaped effigies, silent witnesses to the Late Woodland cultures that shaped the Iowa landscape over a millennium ago. Following the hiking trails of the North Unit, you reach the Fire Point Bear Mound, a bear-shaped effigy. This mound, one of the 31 preserved animal effigies, dates from the Woodland period and is revealed amidst the landscapes of Harpers Ferry. The North Unit houses 67 mounds, including several bear and bird effigies, along the Mississippi. These archaeological remains, the oldest of which date back to 500 BC, are a reminder of the communities that thrived in this region of Iowa.

Your exploration continues to the Marching Bear Group, a set of 10 effigy mounds depicting bears in single file. Dated to the first millennium CE, these formations are an example of the ingenuity of the Late Woodland cultures, who built them between 500 and 1000 CE. Also located in the North Unit, along the Mississippi River, this group is a significant part of the 67 mounds in this section of the monument, offering insight into the beliefs and practices of these ancient peoples of Iowa.

The trail then leads you to the South Unit, where Allamakee and Clayton counties meet. There you discover the Great Bear Mound, the largest effigy on the site. Measuring 42 meters from head to tail and elevated by more than one meter, this monumental work was built by the Effigy Mound culture over 1000 years ago. The South Unit houses 29 mounds, including this imposing effigy, part of the 206 preserved mounds, all built by the Woodland Indians in this region of Iowa.
