Lead Mining and River Commerce

Galena's origins are tied to lead. The city is named after galena, the natural form of lead sulfide. Native American tribes, including the Sac and Fox, mined this lead for body paint and burial rituals before European arrival. French explorers documented these lead deposits in 1658.

The United States Congress established a lead-mining district in 1807, leading to a mineral rush in the 1820s. The first permanent white settlers arrived in 1821, and the town was formally established as Galena in 1826. The population grew rapidly, reaching an estimated 10,000 by 1828, at one point comparable in size to Chicago. Galena became a major steamboat port on the Mississippi River, handling large quantities of lead ore. In 1845, 54 million pounds of lead were shipped from Galena, with Jo Daviess County producing 80% of the lead in the United States.

Economic Decline and Preservation Efforts

Galena's prosperity began to decline in the 1860s. The lead mining industry diminished as resources were depleted. The town's reliance on steamboats, rather than the expanding railroad network, contributed to its economic downturn. The Galena River also experienced silting, which made navigation difficult for steamboats. By the end of the 19th century, Galena's population had fallen from a peak of approximately 14,000 to below 3,500.

Beginning in the 1960s, efforts to restore the city's historic sites transformed Galena. The city is now a preserved example of an antebellum Midwestern city and a destination for visitors interested in its history.

• —Ulysses S. Grant Home — This Italianate brick house was given to Grant after the Civil War in 1865. The home is maintained with original furniture and offers a view into Grant's life before and after his presidency.
• —Old Market House State Historic Site — Built in 1845-1846 in the Greek Revival style, this building served as the city market and city hall during Galena's lead-mining era. It now houses exhibits on Ulysses S. Grant and the Civil War, including artifacts belonging to Grant and his family.
• —Main Street — This street features preserved 19th-century brick buildings. Architectural styles include Federal and Italianate. Many buildings now contain independent shops, galleries, and restaurants.
• —DeSoto House Hotel — Constructed in 1855, this Italianate-style hotel has elaborate detailing. Figures such as Abraham Lincoln and Stephen A. Douglas spoke from its balcony.
• —Elihu B. Washburne House — This historic site was the home of Congressman Elihu Washburne, who played a role in Grant's military appointments and presidential campaign. Grant waited for his presidential election results here.
• —Belvedere Mansion — Built in 1857, this Italianate mansion was once home to a riverboat captain. It features a large tower and an ornate dome.
• —Galena History Museum — Located in the former Galena Public Library building, the museum has exhibits on the city's lead mining history and the Civil War.

The best times to visit Galena are from mid-May through mid-June and mid-August through late September. The weather is warm, suitable for walking Main Street, hiking the bluffs, and visiting local wineries. Late spring includes events like the Corkless wine festival and the Great Galena Balloon Race. Fall, from mid-September through late October, is popular for its foliage, harvest festivals, and the Halloween Parade.

Summer, especially July, can be warm with average highs around 83°F (28°C) and humidity. Winter, from December to March, is cold, with average highs around 29°F (-1°C) and lows reaching 11°F (-11.7°C) in January. Winter offers snow scenery and skiing, but daylight hours are short.

Galena is in the northwest corner of Illinois, about three hours from Chicago. There is no major airport in Galena; visitors typically fly into larger regional airports and drive. The historic downtown is walkable, with attractions concentrated along Main Street.

Parking is available downtown, near Main Street, and on the east side in Depot Park. Free all-day public parking lots exist, such as the one near the Old Train Depot Visitors' Information Center, accessible from U.S. 20 via Park Avenue and Bouthillier Street. Pedestrian bridges connect this lot to downtown. Paid parking is also available via the ParkMobile app, online, or text. During busy times, parking may be limited. Free shuttle services operate seasonally on Saturdays and Sundays from Depot Park and Meeker Lot to Downtown Galena.
