The Secret Cult of the Crocodile God
« « The Egyptians consider crocodiles sacred, and some nourish them, offering them cakes and meat. » »— Herodotus, Histories, Book II (c. 440 BCE)
The Temple of Kom Ombo is unique in Egypt for its perfectly symmetrical design and dual dedication. Begun under Ptolemy VI Philometor (c. 180-145 BCE) and later enriched by numerous Ptolemaic pharaohs and Roman emperors, it is dedicated to two divine triads. To the south, Sobek, the crocodile god of fertility and creator of the world, is worshipped with his consort Hathor and their son Khonsu. To the north, Haroeris (Horus the Elder) is associated with Tasenetnofret and their child Panebtawy. This duality reflects the cosmic balance sought by the Egyptians, where the creative and protective forces of the Nile were constantly honored.
The cult of Sobek was particularly influential in Kom Ombo, where sacred crocodiles were raised in adjacent pools to the temple, then mummified and buried in catacombs. These ritual practices, intended to ensure the fertility of the land and the prosperity of the kingdom, were complex and required a deep knowledge of the Nile's cycles and celestial bodies. The temple's inscriptions and reliefs, although partially destroyed, attest to the importance of these rituals, as well as the medical and astronomical knowledge of the priests, some of whose instruments are depicted on the walls.
