Bubastis, or Per-Bast, was one of the most significant cities of ancient Egypt, particularly during the Third Intermediate Period. As the capital of the 18th Lower Egyptian nome, it became the seat of power for the pharaohs of the 22nd Dynasty (circa 945-715 BCE), of Libyan origin. It was under these rulers, such as Shoshenq I and Osorkon II, that the city reached its peak, with the Great Temple of Bastet being considerably expanded and beautified.
