The Spice Archipelago and the Portuguese Storm
In the 16th century, the Moluccas islands, and Ternate in particular, were the beating heart of the global clove trade, a spice of inestimable value. Drawn by this wealth, the Portuguese established their presence in Ternate as early as 1512, building Fort São João Baptista and seeking to monopolize trade. Their growing dominance, marked by injustices and forced conversion attempts, culminated in 1570 with the assassination of Sultan Hairun by Captain Diogo Lopes de Mesquita. This ignoble act triggered an unprecedented revolt led by his son, Prince Baabullah.
Baabullah, who became Sultan, embodied his people's fierce resistance. He organized a five-year siege against the Portuguese fort, rallying neighboring kingdoms and demonstrating remarkable military strategy. In 1575, the Portuguese were finally forced to capitulate and leave Ternate, marking a resounding victory for the Moluccas. Four years later, as Spain and Portugal united, the English privateer Sir Francis Drake, in the midst of his circumnavigation, stopped in Ternate. Baabullah, seeking allies against the Hispano-Portuguese threat, formed a symbolic alliance with Drake, reinforcing his kingdom's reputation as an independent maritime power.
