The guardians of Blue and the forbidden whispers
Voroneț Monastery was founded in 1488 by Stephen the Great (Ștefan cel Mare), Prince of Moldavia, in honor of a military victory. Built in three months and three weeks, the church is a masterpiece of Moldavian architecture. However, it was during the reign of Petru Rareș, Stephen's son, that the famous exterior frescoes were added in 1547. These paintings, characterized by the renowned 'Voroneț Blue' – an intense and luminous shade of blue whose exact composition remains a secret – cover the entirety of the exterior walls, notably the impressive 'Last Judgment' scene on the west facade.
