The Genesis of the Myth and the Princely Monastery
The legend of Master Manole is one of the most famous Romanian folk ballads, known as "Mănăstirea Argeșului" (The Argeș Monastery). It tells the story of Manole, a master mason, and his nine apprentices, commissioned by Prince Radu Negru (often identified with Radu cel Mare, Radu the Great) to build a magnificent monastery. However, every day they built, the walls collapsed at night. One evening, Manole dreamed that he had to sacrifice the first woman who would bring them food the next day for the monastery to stand.
Tragically, it was Ana, his own pregnant wife, who appeared. Despite his despair, Manole and his men walled her alive into the foundations. The monastery was completed, of unparalleled splendor, but the prince, fearing Manole would never build a more beautiful edifice, removed the scaffolding, trapping the masons on the roof. Manole attempted to fashion wings from shingles but fell to his death, and where he crashed, a clear spring emerged, said to be Ana's tears. The current monastery was built between 1512 and 1517 by Neagoe Basarab, a Wallachian Prince, and is a masterpiece of Byzantine and Romanian architecture.
