Putna Monastery was founded by Stephen the Great, Voivode of Moldavia, between 1466 and 1469. After each military victory against the Ottomans, the legendary ruler erected a church or monastery. Putna, dedicated to the Virgin Mary, became his burial place and a major spiritual center for Moldavia. It was a revered pilgrimage site, symbolizing faith and resistance against invasions.
Despite its fortifications, Putna did not always escape devastation. In 1476, after the Moldavian defeat at the Battle of Valea Albă (Războieni), Ottoman forces reached the monastery. Although it has been rebuilt and restored multiple times, stories of hidden or lost treasures and relics during these periods of uncertainty persist, fueling local legends about 'Stephen's Treasure'.
