The Rubber Baron's Secret — Manaus 1890

Between the late 19th and early 20th centuries, Manaus became the epicenter of an unprecedented gold rush: elastic rubber. Global demand for rubber exploded with the invention of pneumatic tires and the rise of the automobile. Manaus, located at the confluence of the Rio Negro and the Amazon, was ideally positioned to export this precious resource. Thousands of migrants flocked, drawn by the promise of wealth. The city transformed into a lavish metropolis, boasting electric trams, a modern sewage system, and buildings imported from Europe, demonstrating a rare opulence for the era.

However, this prosperity was fragile. In 1876, an Englishman named Henry Wickham smuggled thousands of rubber tree seeds from Brazil to the Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew, near London. These seeds were then cultivated in Southeast Asia, where industrial plantations quickly became more efficient and less costly than wild collection in the Amazon. The global rubber market abruptly collapsed after 1912, marking the end of the 'Rubber Dream' and plunging Manaus into a period of decline, from which the city would only much later recover, seeking to diversify its economy.
