Nucky Johnson and the Prohibition Era
Enoch Lewis Johnson, nicknamed 'Nucky', was the powerful Atlantic County Treasurer and political 'boss' of Atlantic City from 1911 to 1941. During Prohibition (1920-1933), he reigned supreme over a city nicknamed the 'Wet Republic'. While the rest of the United States suffered under the alcohol ban, Atlantic City prospered through illegal gambling, prostitution, and alcohol smuggling, all tolerated and organized by Nucky's network.
