The Ming Dynasty and the Era of Powerful Eunuchs
The Ming Dynasty (1368-1644) was a period of grandeur and turbulence for China. The Forbidden City, completed in 1420 under the Yongle Emperor, symbolized imperial majesty. However, behind its high walls, eunuchs, once simple castrated servants to ensure the purity of the imperial lineage, had gradually accumulated colossal political and military power. They controlled the daily life of the palace, the information that reached the emperor, and often access to his person, becoming indispensable figures in court intrigues.
This influence reached its peak at the end of the dynasty, notably with figures like Wei Zhongxian (1568-1627). The latter, a favorite of Emperor Tianqi, was the head of the powerful Eastern Depot (Dongchang), a feared secret police agency. His corruption and tyranny were so notorious that he was nicknamed "the eunuch dictator." After Tianqi's death and the accession of Emperor Chongzhen in 1627, Wei Zhongxian was swiftly removed from office and forced to commit suicide, marking the end of the era of all-powerful eunuchs in state affairs, although the system persisted.
