The Decade of Forced Forgetting
Launched in 1966 by Mao Zedong, the Great Proletarian Cultural Revolution officially aimed to purge Chinese society of 'revisionist' and 'bourgeois' elements and consolidate his power. It quickly degenerated into a decade of political and social chaos, where youth, the Red Guards, were instrumentalized to lead a campaign to destroy the "Four Olds": old ideas, old culture, old customs, and old habits. Millions of people were persecuted, intellectual and artistic life came to a halt, and invaluable cultural heritage was deliberately destroyed or damaged.
Beijing was the central stage for this destructive frenzy. Historic sites like the Temple of Confucius, the Forbidden City, and countless temples and monasteries were targeted. The Red Guards organized public 'struggle sessions' and book burnings. Faced with this devastation, some cadres and intellectuals secretly tried to save what they could, hiding artifacts in unexpected places, copying manuscripts, or moving works of art to protect them from the iconoclastic fury.
