On April 15, 1989, the death of Hu Yaobang, former General Secretary of the Chinese Communist Party and a reformist figure, sparked a national mourning movement that quickly escalated into a vast student protest. Thousands of students gathered in Tiananmen Square in Beijing, demanding more democracy, freedom of speech, and an end to corruption. The movement gained momentum, attracting millions of people and captivating global attention.
Despite attempts at dialogue, the Chinese government, under the leadership of Deng Xiaoping, declared martial law on May 19, 1989. On the night of June 3-4, the People's Liberation Army was deployed and violently suppressed demonstrators in and around Tiananmen Square. The exact number of casualties remains controversial, but thousands of deaths and injuries were reported. This was followed by brutal repression and total censorship of the event, which remains a taboo in China.
