The Mystery of the Silver Pharaoh in Tanis
« Je suis le roi glorieux qui a exercé la royauté sur l'Égypte de Tanis à Napata, en tant que maître des Deux Terres. »— Psousennès Ier
Tanis, known in antiquity as Djanet, became the capital of Egypt under the 21st Dynasty (circa 1070-945 BC). Located in the Nile Delta, it was chosen by pharaohs of Libyan origin as a new Northern Thebes, with large temples dedicated to Amun, Mut, and Khonsu. It was here that the pharaohs of this period, including Psusennes I, as well as their powerful High Priests of Amun, chose to build their tombs. These royal burials, unlike those in the Valley of the Kings, were integrated within the enclosure of the great temple of Amun itself.
The discovery of the royal necropolis of Tanis by Pierre Montet, between 1939 and 1940, was a major archaeological event, despite the outbreak of World War II which limited its global resonance. Among the six royal and princely tombs unearthed, that of Psusennes I (NRT III) was the only one found intact, revealing an outer sarcophagus of pink granite plundered from Ramesses II, an intermediate sarcophagus of black granite plundered from Merenptah, and a rare inner sarcophagus of solid silver. This intact treasure offered an unprecedented glimpse into the funerary practices of this dynasty.
