On April 17, 1975, the fall of Phnom Penh marked the beginning of the Khmer Rouge regime. Battambang, Cambodia's second-largest city, was quickly emptied of its inhabitants, forced into rural exodus and forced labor in agricultural camps. Thousands perished from hunger, disease, or summary executions.
