Carthage Tophet — Child Sacrifice Enigma

The Tophet of Salammbô, in Carthage, is one of the most enigmatic and controversial archaeological sites of Punic civilization. Discovered in the early 20th century, this sacred place revealed thousands of urns containing the cremated remains of children, often accompanied by votive stelae. Ancient sources, primarily Roman, describe with horror the sacrifices of young children, or 'molk', offered to the gods Baal Hammon and Tanit to appease their wrath or seek their favor. These accounts largely contributed to forging the image of a barbaric and cruel Carthage.

However, modern interpretations differ. While some archaeologists and historians lean towards the reality of ritual sacrifices, others put forward the hypothesis that the Tophet was primarily a cemetery for infants who died of natural causes or were stillborn, where specific funerary rites were practiced. 'Roman calumny', motivated by war propaganda and the demonization of their sworn enemy, would have transformed these practices into acts of barbarism. The debate remains open, and the Tophet remains a poignant testament to the beliefs and tragedies of ancient Carthage.
