The Miracle of Saint Euverte
The legend of the Miracle of the Beautiful Doors dates back to the 4th century, when Saint Euverte, the fourth bishop of Orléans, was preparing to consecrate the city's first cathedral. According to tradition, at the precise moment when the bishop was about to bless the altar, a divine hand appeared in the air and completed the consecration. Saint Euverte, witnessing this celestial manifestation, immediately interrupted the ceremony, declaring that the edifice, having been blessed by God himself, had no need to be blessed by a man.
This belief crossed the centuries and profoundly marked the religious identity of Orléans. Even after successive reconstructions of the cathedral — notably the one that gave birth to the current Sainte-Croix —, no bishop ever dared to perform a new consecration. The keystone of the current chevet would still bear the symbolic trace of this divine blessing, making Sainte-Croix the only cathedral in France to have never received human consecration.
