In the 4th century, Bishop Saint Euverte was preparing to consecrate the first cathedral of Orléans according to traditional rites. But at the moment of blessing the altar, an extraordinary vision interrupts the ceremony: the hand of God appears in a halo of golden light and directly touches the sacred stone. The bishop, seized by this miracle, then declares that since the cathedral has been blessed by the Creator himself, no human consecration is necessary.
This legend, transmitted from century to century, explains why no subsequent bishop has ever deemed it necessary to re-consecrate Sainte-Croix Cathedral in Orléans. The keystone of the chevet still bears today the Latin inscription witnessing this unique miracle.
