The 1963 Eruption and Divine Protection
On March 17, 1963, Mount Agung, Bali's highest mountain and its most sacred volcano, erupted with unprecedented violence. Cataclysmic explosions hurled debris for miles, and pyroclastic flows raced down its slopes at high speed, destroying everything in their path. Rivers of scorching lava flowed southeast and south, annihilating villages and crops, and causing the deaths of over 1,500 people. The island was covered in volcanic ash for weeks, plunging Bali into a period of mourning and famine.
However, amidst this devastation, an extraordinary phenomenon occurred. The lava flows, which directly threatened the sprawling Pura Besakih complex, inexplicably stopped just short of reaching the main sanctuary, Pura Penataran Agung. This was a tremendous shock and relief for the Balinese, who saw it as a clear sign of divine protection granted to their 'Mother Temple', the most important and sacred of their places of worship, considered the spiritual heart of the island.
