The End of Roman and Byzantine Africa
In the 7th century, North Africa, under Byzantine rule since Justinian's reconquest, was a wealthy but restless province. The Exarchate of Africa, a semi-autonomous entity, was led by Exarch Gregory, a powerful dignitary. Displeased with Emperor Heraclius II's religious policy and tax pressures, Gregory declared himself independent around 646, moving his capital from Carthage to Sufetula (Sbeitla), a more defensible inland city.
This secession occurred as the Caliphate's armies, freshly victorious in Egypt, began their expansion westward. In 647, a Muslim force led by Abdullah ibn Sa'd confronted Gregory's Byzantine troops and Berber allies at Sufetula. The battle was decisive: Gregory was defeated and killed, effectively marking the end of Byzantine power in inner Africa and paving the way for future Arab conquests that would culminate in the fall of Carthage in 698.
