Harbour Island — Tracing Lord Dunmore's Legacy
« As long as these islands remain loyal to the Crown, their future will be secured. »— John Murray, 4th Earl of Dunmore (attributed)
After the American Revolution (1775-1783), thousands of Loyalists, faithful to the British Crown, fled the nascent United States to settle in the remaining colonies of the Empire, including the Bahamas. Harbour Island, with its protected harbor, became an important anchorage for these colonists seeking to rebuild their lives. They brought with them their traditions, their expertise, and, for many, their slaves, transforming the social and economic landscape of the archipelago.
It was John Murray, 4th Earl of Dunmore, former governor of Virginia and the Bahamas from 1787 to 1796, who gave the island its decisive impetus. He officially founded Dunmore Town in the early 1790s, naming it in his honor. Under his aegis, the town was planned, important buildings were constructed, and lands were allocated, creating the setting for what would become one of the jewels of the Bahamas, imbued with a rich and complex colonial history.
