Loyalist Settlement and Early Life

The Abaco Islands were initially inhabited by the Lucayan people. By the early 1500s, the Spanish had enslaved the Lucayans, and diseases reduced the remaining population. For over 150 years, the islands remained largely unpopulated by Europeans, with only a brief French settlement and a rumored Portuguese whaling station.

Abaco's modern history began in 1783, after the American Revolutionary War. Around 1,500 Loyalists, who remained faithful to King George III, departed New York and settled in Abaco. They established communities such as Carleton, near present-day Treasure Cay, and Marsh Harbour. Hope Town, on Elbow Cay, was co-founded in 1785 by Wyannie Malone, a widow from South Carolina, and her children, who were Loyalist soldiers. These early settlers faced difficult conditions, relying on subsistence fishing, small-scale farming, and salvaging goods from shipwrecks.

Maritime Industries and Infrastructure

In the 19th century, boat building became an industry in Abaco, particularly on Man-O-War Cay. By the 1880s, about 70% of the boat builders on Man-O-War Cay shared the Albury surname, specializing in smacks, sloops, schooners, and Abaco dinghies. This maritime expertise supported fishing and commerce throughout the Bahamas. The practice of "wrecking" – salvaging cargo from ships foundered on reefs – also contributed to the local economy.

The construction of the Elbow Reef Lighthouse in Hope Town, which began in 1862 and became operational in 1863, was met with resistance from some locals. They feared it would reduce their income from shipwrecks. The candy-striped lighthouse was completed and contributed to safer shipping, fostering commerce in the area. By the early 20th century, the demand for wooden ships declined with the rise of steam shipping, leading many boat builders to seek work elsewhere. Today, traditional boat-building skills are preserved on Man-O-War Cay, with some builders transitioning to fiberglass in the 1980s as local timber became scarce.

The dry season, from December to April, is the best time to visit Abaco. Temperatures range from 73°F to 80°F (23°C to 27°C). The sea is calm, and trade winds create conditions for boating. This is the busiest period, so book accommodations and activities in advance.

May and June offer warm weather with fewer crowds. The hurricane season runs from June through November, peaking in late summer and early fall. This period should be avoided due to increased rainfall and storm risk.

The main entry point to Abaco is the Leonard M. Thompson International Airport (MHH) in Marsh Harbour, which handles domestic flights from Nassau and other Bahamian islands, as well as international flights, primarily from Florida. Treasure Cay Airport (TCB) also serves smaller planes. Taxis are usually available at the airports and mainland ferry docks; booking in advance is advisable.

Getting around the cays like Hope Town and Man-O-War Cay often involves ferries and golf carts, as motorized vehicles are restricted in some areas. G&L Ferry provides transportation between Marsh Harbour and Hope Town, Man-O-War Cay, and Great Guana Cay. Public transport options on the main island are limited, so private car services or taxis are often used for longer distances.
