Malioboro — The Forgotten Journal

🎭Your Mission

You are a trusted royal archivist in the court of Sultan Hamengkubuwono I, Yogyakarta, 1755.

Your urgent task: locate the Sultan's forgotten journal,

Delve into the secret alleys of Yogyakarta, where the echo of sultans and independence heroes still resonates on ancient stones.

The story that haunts this land

Your journal quest begins at Kraton Yogyakarta, the current residence of Sultan Hamengkubuwono X. This 2.6-hectare complex, erected in 1755 by the first Sultan after the Treaty of Giyanti, is a historical monument of Javanese heritage. Observe the 4 main gates and traditional buildings. It is here that Javanese royal ceremonies take place, such as Grebeg Sawal, where mountains of sticky rice are offered, a ritual that preserves the memory of ancestors and centuries-old traditions of the dynasty.

Continue to Taman Sari, the royal bathing complex built around 1758-1760 by Sultan Hamengkubuwono I. This complex, with its Portuguese and Chinese architects, reveals a unique architectural fusion. Explore the 1.5 km of underground passages and tunnels that connected this site to the Kraton, used as a bunker during the 1945-1949 War of Independence. The sacred Sumur Gumuling pool, 123m², reserved for sultanas for ritual baths, will give you an insight into the customs of the royal court of Yogyakarta.

The path then leads you to Kampung Kauman, a historic district housing the Great Mosque of the Kraton, founded in 1773 by Sultan Hamengkubuwono I. Admire the traditional wooden joglo houses, built between 1773 and 1813 for religious dignitaries. This spiritual center of the Yogyakarta sultanate, with its syncretic Hindu-Islamic rituals, offers a perspective on the region's religious history. It is a place less known to tourists, but essential to understanding Javanese heritage.

Approaching Benteng Vredeburg, a star-shaped fort with 4 bastions, measuring 200m x 200m, you delve into Yogyakarta's Dutch colonial history. Built in 1765 to protect the Resident against the neighboring Kraton, it became a museum in 1992, exhibiting the Indonesian struggle for independence (1945-1949). This historical monument was even used as a prison by the Japanese during the 1942-1945 occupation. Jalan Malioboro, an emblematic 2.5 km street connecting the Kraton to Tugu Station, was the scene of barricades erected in 1945-1949 against Dutch forces.

Your journey concludes at Monumen Tugu Pal Putih, a 20m neoclassical obelisk erected in 1828-1858 after the 1867 earthquake. Originally Tugu Palihan Nagari (1755), it was rebuilt after the magnitude 7 earthquake that killed 2300 people. Stasiun Tugu Yogyakarta, a station built in 1887 by the Dutch with its Greek pediment, witnessed Sukarno's arrival in 1945, proclaiming the independence of Central Java. By following this thematic circuit, you will have explored the monuments of Yogyakarta and discovered the cultural heritage of Java, a true journey through Indonesia's history.

1957
Sukarno declares 'Guided Democracy,' strengthening the role of the army and the PKI.
1965
October, beginning of large-scale massacres following the G30S.
1999
Suharto's fall, beginning of an era of reforms and re-evaluation of the 1965 events.
