Dedicated to Isis, one of the best-preserved temples of ancient Egypt was mainly built by Ptolemaic pharaohs and completed by Roman emperors, making Philae a major pilgrimage center. Its unique location, considered one of Osiris's burial places, enhanced its mystical aura. The cult of Isis, revered for her healing powers and ability to restore life, spread far beyond Egyptian borders, reaching Rome and other provinces of the Empire.
However, with the advent of Christianity, pagan practices were gradually prohibited. In 391 AD, Emperor Theodosius I's edict marked a turning point, outlawing polytheistic cults.
