Komodo Island — The Varanus Cryptogram

🎭Your Mission

You are a present-day cryptographer and historical researcher, arriving on Komodo Island to unravel a century-old mystery.

In 1912, Lieutenant J.K.H. van

**The Varanus Cryptogram: Tracing the First Expeditions to Komodo**

« These creatures are remnants of a bygone era, masters of a world they dominate with silent brutality. »
Peter Ouwens, 1912 (paraphrasé)

The Revelation of the Last Great Reptile

Before the 20th century, rumors of a giant beast on isolated Indonesian islands were merely legends. It was only with the arrival of the Dutch that these stories were taken seriously. In 1910, Lieutenant J.K.H. van Steyn van Hensbroek was the first to document these 'land crocodiles,' sending a specimen and detailed description to Peter Ouwens in Java. Ouwens' scientific description in 1912, naming the animal Varanus komodoensis, caused a sensation and brought worldwide attention to this unique predator, the largest living lizard.

Soon, the fascination with the Komodo dragon gave way to concern for its survival. As early as 1915, the Dutch colonial government issued laws to protect the species from excessive hunting, recognizing its vulnerability. Labuan Bajo, initially a modest fishing village, became the gateway for scientific expeditions and, later, tourism. In 1980, Komodo National Park was established to safeguard not only the dragons but also their unique marine and terrestrial ecosystem, symbolizing the fragile balance between discovery, conservation, and tourist appeal.

Frequently asked questions

Q01Komodo Island — The Varanus Cryptogram — is it a guided trail or a free-form hunt?

It's a semi-guided trail: GPS points you to the next stop, but you find the camera clue and solve the puzzle yourself. No app to install, everything runs in your browser.

Q02Can we split Komodo Island — The Varanus Cryptogram across two days?

Yes — your code stays active and progress is saved. You can start Saturday afternoon, finish Sunday morning. Some players actually prefer this format to make the most of a full weekend on site.

Q03Can we do Komodo Island — The Varanus Cryptogram as a family with kids?

Yes, from age 6 with an adult reading puzzles aloud, and from age 12 on their own. Kids love the "find the camera clue" part — it's very visual, gets them genuinely involved.

Q04Do we need 4G data to play?

Intermittent 4G is plenty. Maps are cached at startup. Narration and clues load per stop, so a so-so signal between stops is fine. GPS itself uses no data.
