After months of humiliating retreats and bitter losses in New York and New Jersey, Washington's Continental Army was on its knees. The harsh winter of 1776 threatened to decimate already dwindling ranks, thinned by desertion and disease. The American Revolution seemed doomed before it could even take flight. Faced with this desperate situation, George Washington knew he had to strike a major blow, not only to win a military victory, but above all to restore the faith of his people and his troops in the cause of independence.
On December 25, 1776, under the cover of a freezing snowstorm, Washington and his men crossed the Delaware River.
