Esna, or Latopolis in Greco-Roman antiquity, was a major religious center dedicated to the ram god Khnum, the serpent Heka, and the goddess Neith. The current temple, mainly its pronaos (hypostyle hall), was built on the foundations of an older temple under the Ptolemies, but it was during the Roman period that its decorative peak was reached. Emperors such as Claudius, Vespasian, Titus, and later Decius, all contributed to the embellishment of its walls, covered with thousands of complex and unique hieroglyphs. These texts, often described as 'cryptographic' by Egyptologists, were the work of a priestly elite keen to demonstrate its mastery of the sacred language and to protect esoteric knowledge related to the cycles of the Nile and the stars.

The priests of Esna were renowned for their erudition and their ability to manipulate the hieroglyphic system to create messages with multiple layers of meaning. The interior of the temple houses a detailed astronomical calendar and hymns to Khnum, depicted as the divine potter who shapes humanity and controls the benevolent flooding of the Nile.
