Leonardo's last secrets
📱 1 to 10 phones · 1 team per phone · Independent codes
Leonardo da Vinci spent the last three years of his life at the Clos Lucé, 500 meters from the Château d'Amboise. His notebooks contain messages hidden in mirror writing — reversed as in a mirror. The greatest genius in History took one last secret to his grave, beneath the Chapel of Saint-Hubert.
In 1516, Francis I invites Leonardo da Vinci to France. He offers him the Clos Lucé manor, steps from the royal Château d'Amboise, and an unprecedented title: "first painter, engineer and architect of the king." Leonardo arrives carrying three paintings — including the Mona Lisa — and thousands of pages of notebooks covered in drawings, inventions and texts written backwards. For three years, the old master and the young king see each other nearly every day, connected by an underground passage.

« "Simplicity is the ultimate sophistication." »— — Leonardo da Vinci, Notebooks
When Leonardo da Vinci arrives at the Clos Lucé in 1516, he is 64 years old. His right hand is paralyzed, but his mind remains prodigious. Francis I, who is 22, is fascinated by the old master. He visits him nearly every day through an underground passage connecting the château to the Clos Lucé — a tunnel that still exists today. Leonardo works on urban planning, hydraulics, and organizes lavish festivities with automata and flying machines.
Leonardo dies at the Clos Lucé on May 2, 1519. Legend has it that Francis I held his head in his arms — a scene painted by Ingres four centuries later. The master is buried in the Collégiale Saint-Florentin in Amboise, then transferred to the Chapel of Saint-Hubert at the château after the church's destruction during the Revolution. His tomb simply reads: "Leonardo da Vinci."
His notebooks — over 7,000 pages — are scattered across Europe. Written in mirror script (right to left, readable in a mirror), they contain inventions that would not be realized for centuries: the helicopter, the tank, the diving suit, the parachute. But some pages remain undeciphered. Leonardo used several coding systems, and historians believe he took certain secrets to his grave.
