Founded by Saxon colonists in the 13th century, Biertan (Birthälm in German) quickly became one of the most important Saxon settlements in Transylvania. Its fortified church, built between the 15th and 16th centuries, is a masterpiece of medieval architecture, surrounded by three defensive walls and nine towers. This strategic position and the community's wealth earned it the status of the Lutheran episcopal seat of Transylvania from 1572 to 1867, solidifying its role as a spiritual and cultural center for the Saxons of the region.
However, it's a unique tradition that sets Biertan apart: the matrimonial prison. Until the early 20th century, Saxon couples wishing to divorce were forced to spend two weeks in a small cell in the church's northeastern tower. During this period, they had to cohabit, sharing a single bed, a single plate, a single spoon, a single glass. The goal was to force reconciliation. Local records attest to the remarkable effectiveness of this method: in over 300 years, only one divorce was registered among couples who underwent this conjugal 'therapy'.
