The Bloody Rivalry for the Moluccas
In the early 17th century, the Moluccas, known as the 'Spice Islands', were the focus of fierce competition among European colonial powers. The Dutch East India Company (VOC) and the English East India Company (EIC) clashed for the monopoly of clove and nutmeg trade. Ambon, with its Nieuw Victoria fortress, was a strategic stronghold of the VOC, but also a constant point of friction due to the English presence.
In February 1623, Dutch Governor Herman van Speult arrested Gabriel Towerson, head of the English factory, and other English merchants, along with Japanese mercenaries in their service, accusing them of conspiring to seize the fort. After interrogations conducted under torture, 'confessions' were obtained, leading to the execution of twenty men. This event, known as the 'Amboyna Massacre', exacerbated Anglo-Dutch tensions and was a key step in the English withdrawal from the region in favor of the Dutch.
